A broken window is amongst the most common forms of damage that a homeowner may encounter, but the method for repairing the broken glass can vary depending upon the window type.  So in today’s article from Squeaky Clean Windows and Glass Restoration, a Dallas window cleaning and glass repair company, we’ll explore the different types of windows in your home and how we repair broken glass in various situations.

Single-Pane, Double-Pane and Triple-Pane Windows

Today’s windows typically have multiple layers of glass. While some lower quality windows may have just one pane, most windows fall into the category of double-pane or triple-pane.

In the case of  a double-pane or triple-pane window, one or two of the layers of glass may break, leaving one or more panes intact. The damage is more than just unsightly; it may also impact the window’s insulation capabilities because many of these multi-pane windows have a gas fill in the void between the layers of glass.

Argon and krypton are two of the most commonly utilized gases because they have a greater density than the ambient air. These krypton and argon filled windows are more effective at providing insulation both in terms of noise and temperature. But once a pane is broken, that gas is allowed to seep out and the window loses its insulating properties.

Broken Windows and Foggy Glass

In addition, once the gas escapes from a krypton or argon gas-filled window, you can end up with a situation where humid air seeps into the space between the panes of glass. When a change in temperature occurs, that moisture in the air may condense, resulting in condensation formation in the gap between the windows. This may result in a situation where you have inexplicably foggy windows. It’s a problem that’s often confusing to homeowners because they may have just one foggy window or one pane of a window that’s foggy — an issue that doesn’t seem to make sense as you’d assume that since all of the windows are exposed to the same conditions, then all should be foggy or all should be clear.  The gas fill between the panes lacks any moisture, so window fogging does not occur. But once that gas fill is gone, you may end up with humid air that can result in the formation of condensation.

How to Repair Broken Glass in a Double or Triple Pane Window

Our repair technicians will evaluate the window to determine how to best perform repairs. In some cases, multiple sections may comprise the window, so our technicians may opt to remove the damaged section in the course of repairs. In other instances, the entire panel may be comprised of a single large pane of glass (comprised of two or three layers). In this case, it’s necessary to repair the entire panel.

If the damage has impacted the frame, the entire window may require replacement, rather than just the glass.

In cases where there is a gas fill, the entire panel will need to be replaced as it’s impossible to “refill” the gas once it has escaped.
